Overview
Air purifiers are useful for a specific set of problems: dust, pet dander, pollen, and general particle sensitivity in a room with limited airflow. They are not a fix for moisture-driven musty smells -- that's a job for ventilation and, where needed, a dehumidifier -- and we make no illness-prevention or complete smoke/mold-elimination claims about any air purifier. It is still a manufacturer-reported figure under standardized test conditions, not a guarantee of real-world performance in your specific room, which has its own airflow patterns, furniture, and air-exchange rate with the outside. Use it as one comparison data point among several, including the manufacturer's stated room-size rating, rather than the sole basis for a decision.
Placement matters as much as size
An air purifier tucked into a corner, behind a couch, or under a table draws in and circulates room air far less effectively than the same unit placed with open space on multiple sides. Manufacturers generally recommend some minimum clearance around the intake and exhaust; check your specific model's guidance rather than assuming any open-ish spot will do.
Central placement in the room you're most trying to address, rather than a spot chosen purely for visual convenience, will generally outperform a correctly sized unit placed poorly. If you have to choose between a slightly larger unit in a bad spot and a well-placed unit sized appropriately for the room, the placement usually matters more.
It's also worth reconsidering placement seasonally. A spot that had open airflow in summer, with lighter furnishings and open windows, might end up crowded by winter storage items or seasonal furniture rearrangement -- a quick placement check each time you significantly reorganize a room is a small habit that keeps a correctly sized purifier performing the way it was rated to.
Filter type and replacement cost
Most air purifiers use a HEPA-style filter, sometimes paired with an activated carbon layer for odor reduction. Filters need periodic replacement, and the replacement cost and schedule vary meaningfully between models -- a purifier that's inexpensive to buy but expensive to keep supplied with filters may cost more over a season than a pricier unit with cheaper, less frequent filter changes.
Factor the ongoing filter cost and replacement interval into your decision from the start, not as an afterthought once you already own the unit. Some purifiers use a washable pre-filter alongside a replaceable main filter, which can extend the main filter's life by catching larger particles first. Smoke, dust, and pet dander
A correctly sized, well-placed air purifier can meaningfully reduce airborne dust and pet dander in the room it's operating in over time.
